Diamond Window

Diamond Window

The diamond window is a highly specialized vacuum-tight connection between a synthetic diamond window and a copper component, developed specifically for use in fusion technology. This component meets the highest standards of precision, cooling, vacuum tightness, and thermal load capacity.

With a diameter of approximately 80 mm and a thickness of 1.8 mm, the diamond window is precisely joined to a copper part that features an integrated liquid cooling structure. This setup allows the transmission of microwave power up to 500 MW, used to stabilize plasma within the reactor vessel. The vacuum-tight seal is achieved by vacuum brazing and reaches a maximum leak rate of 10⁻⁹ mbar l/s.

Applications

Diamond windows serve as precise transmission components for lasers, microwaves, or detection beams in fusion reactors or plasma labs. They offer extremely high transparency while maintaining excellent thermal and mechanical stability.

more

Due to their high permeability for microwave frequencies and minimal absorption, diamond windows are ideal for use in gyrotrons, couplers, or RF power units – especially in high-power and UHV environments.

Whether at high temperatures, in vacuum, or under radiation exposure – diamond windows enable precise optical diagnostics thanks to their hardness, temperature resistance, and chemical durability. Typical uses include infrared spectroscopy, laser, or synchrotron beam experiments.

Key Manufacturing Features

  • Thermal and Mechanical Load Capacity: The diamond window must transmit up to 500 MW of microwave power while the integrated liquid cooling removes heat efficiently.
  • Material Compatibility: Joining synthetic diamond and copper requires optimized designs and brazing processes to minimize thermal stresses.
  • Vacuum Brazing: A strictly controlled process ensures vacuum-tight joints with no filler protrusion that could affect microwave function.
  • Cooling Structure: Precisely manufactured liquid cooling channels in the copper component ensure even heat dissipation.
  • Efficient Heat Removal: The design prevents overheating via optimized liquid cooling.

The diamond window is a key component for advances in fusion technology. It combines cutting-edge materials science, precise manufacturing, and innovative engineering to meet extreme demands. With outstanding performance in energy transmission and heat dissipation, it is an indispensable element in plasma research and fusion applications.
